Thanks Peter,

Since I have machine to experiment with, in the near future, I might
reinstall from fresh. In the past, this machine (Mac Book Pro and
MacMini), Ruby on Rails with that simple statement work.

but somehow, don't know what cause it and when it happen and why it
happen, suddenly just stop working.

And the funny thing is, others than that ruby generations, "rails
server" working just fine

Server side Custom Serialization only

Hi,

I want to add a custom serialization to my objects but only on the
server side (to store them as Lob). Any idea of how I could do that?
The custom writeObject and readObject won't work, I get a Unresolved
type java.io.ObjectOutputStream error...

Any help would be VERY much appreciated.

I figured it out... my mistake was simply not accessing the nested hash

[android-developers] Stream issues

I have a Bluetooth application based on BluetoothChat. In fact, I've
seen the same issue running that application as a test.

The app communicates with another Bluetooth device (not Android). That
device doesn't always send all the data in one chunk to Android
(although supposedly it does to other Bluetooth phones...like
Blackberry).

Sometimes the data comes over as one byte, followed by 9, followed by
the final 9. I never see this when talking Android phone to Android
phone, just Android phone to this device.

Looking at the BluetoothChat application, there is no checking to see
if the stream is complete. It just has a run that stays alive putting
data into a buffer then sends that buffer to a Handler. Here is the
exact code:

Since the buffer never gets cleared, I would think that longer
messages that come before shorter ones would show partly in the
buffer. Also, there is no check to see if all of the data has been
transmitted (doesn't read return a -1 when the end of the stream is
hit and shouldn't that be checked?).

Just curious if others have run into similar issues on Android and how
they got around it.

BTW, there is a BIG difference in Bluetooth connection ability between
Android phones. I have one phone almost never connects while other
phones do almost always.

As Alan said, it won't really:

"Our compatibility plan has two notable shortcomings: it doesn't work for add-ons with binary components and it doesn't work for add-ons not hosted on AMO. And the DevMode plugin has to use a binary component.

It's not an Android issue.

It's not even a Java issue.

The issue is: trying to use C++ syntax in Java.

Inheritance is one of the things where Java is not quite the same as C++
(putting it mildly) - and the syntax differs too.

I'd recommend spending a couple hours on a Java crash course, they can
be easily found with Google Search.

I am using a CheckBoxSelectionModel in a Grid as a selection model.
I changed the render to show only the checkboxes when a particular
value is present in the row information. But I still have the top
checkbox that selects all lines of the grid and I want to hide it.

How can I do that?

    I have a product and in the view I need to show a listbox with all the categories of this product.

        - Option2: in the view just write "<%= f.collection_select(:product_category_id, ProductCategori.all, :id, :name) %>"

    Question 2:
    I need to list products with some complex logic
        - Option1: in the controller make "@products = Products.list(param1, param2)" and in the model "def self.list(param1, param2)" with all the options joins, where, ...
        - Option2: Put all the logic in the controller and avoid calling the model

AFAIK, the sqlite sms db has already been created by your stock sms
app
and it's recommended to use the same through the ContentResolver class
for any SMS related app.

By the way, this would be a really good time for you to go read up on
how to use the Eclipse debugger. This would allow you to put a
breakpoint on your onLocatoonChanged and see if it ever executes.

Additionally, if you don't get any errors, watch the log cat for
errors / warnings as your app executes..

[android-developers] android onBackPressed not called under tab

Hi friends,

I have Main Activity. That has 5 tabs(TabHost). I have overridden onBackPressed in activity groups, as well As All 5 activities. This button show user a dialog box and for confirmation of Exit When app start. It show 1st tab. Then if I press back it work fine for 4 tabs. But if I go for last tab and then press back, The app closes .But there is not dialogue for the user.Even nothing is print in log cat. That I have written in onBackPressed() method From and of 5 activities including MainActivity.

I have also try onKeyDown() for back key but result is same? Please reply,its too critical

Personally, I would do this in models.py so it would run in any form's
clean method. In which case ...

class X(models.Model):
...

def clean(self):
self.txt = self.txt.strip()

Assuming you mean you only care about the contents of txt if there is
something there AND then if so, you want the user to make a Yes/No
selection ...

Have a look at list comprehension in the Python docs. It might help if
you make TO_USE into a list of tuples instead of a tuple of tuples. I'm
not as familiar with list comprehension as I should be and I suspect my
verbose approach above could be squished considerably.

Just as an aside, you ought to be able to extract all the functionality
ordinarily required without having to resort to __internal__() methods.
They are really for people who want to tweak the language in "special"
ways or give their own classes python-like class properties.

[android-developers] Ice Cream Sandwich and high memory usage on launch

I was doing some memory profiling recently for another issue, and I found that, on my phone running ICS,

as soon as I launch the app the memory is already at about 7 MB, when it was usually about 4 MB in others.

I looked at the HPROF file and it seems like the app is keeping a bunch (all?) of my app's drawables in memory.

Is there some pre-fetching going on? Why was this changed? Is there any way to disable this? How does

this affect calls to recycle() (see this stackoverflow question)? Is there some official documentation for the

change?

Or maybe there's something else going on...

Hi Thomas:

I moved to 2.4, and the compiler told me about an error in my proxy
related to ChoiceGroup that I had not caught. Oone of the server side
methods was using an interface for which there was no proxy. I
remember complaining about the lack of tool support for this last
summer, with the fragility of unchecked strings in annotations, and
you had mentioned that better support would exist in the next version
of RF & the Eclipse plugin.

There was a reasonable amount of headache in moving to 2.4, but once
that was done, the code started working as expected on the deployed
version.

This is out of my expertise area... But, some other guesses & hints
below:
- Maybe a threading issue? If you disable multi-threaded mode of
mod_wsgi in Apache conf does the segfault still happen? mod_wsgi
documentation tells you how to do this.
- Next, I would maybe alter the installed Django to do debug printing
from various places (most notably, before the import of psycopg2 in
django/db/backends/psycopg2/base.py and in settings.py so that we can
see if even settings.py get imported, ever). This way you can likely
"bisect" the place where the error happens.
- Next (or alternatively), try to create a minimal Django project,
adding your dependencies one at a time until you hit the error.
- It seems a little suspicious this happens under apache, but not
under dev-server. Are there any differences in the Python used, or in
the path used?

Unfortunately this is all the help I can give you.

You seem to have some C-based module (psycopg2?) which isn't working
correctly under Apache, or more likely, with the Python you are using
when running under Apache. If you are copying the psycopg2 module (or
any other compiled C based module) from machine to machine things are
likely to break. The hint that this is a compiled module issue is
here:

[android-developers] Finishing ActivityGroup which combine Top and Bottom tabs together in same activity ??

I made ActivityGroup which combined two activities one activity for
TOP tab and second one for BOTTOM tab and it works fine BUT when I
click in any activity on tab both tabs (top and bottom) still there
however this activity don't have them.

My question now how I finish this ActivityGroup how I get rid of it
when I click on any activity in this tabs i tried using finish() but i
throws exception . may be this a stupid question but i still beginner
in android and really appreciate any help

Hi guys,

I manage to put my context panel to the middle of the browser page in
Vaadin. Seem my screenshots. It is done purely in Java code, the only
CSS used is for setting colors and font sizes.
Now I wondering how to make something similar with vanilla GWT.

In Vaadin it is one line command!

This is a large OEM app running on a custom tablet-like display, so
it's not going on the market and has nothing to do with a cellphone.

Our current system uses a single exe and multiple dll's which all
create widgets from a shared widget library. So currently we can make
a change to only one of the dll's, which could change the widgets
owned by this dll, without rebuilding the exe and other dll's. With
Android everything is packaged into a single APK. Within this APK we
could have multiple jar's, however making a UI change to one of the
jars would require the whole APK be rebuilt, if I understand this
correctly.

[Rails] Updated Reserved Words?

In another thread, status was apparently outed as a reserved word, but I can't find that documented anywhere. The latest list that Google could find was from July 2011, and it didn't include that word.

The "old" wiki comes up in searches, but doesn't appear to be maintained any more. I've looked through the Rails Guides, and this doesn't appear to be a topic there. Can anyone point to a canonical resource listing all of the words guaranteed to make Rails angry?

That code is not using the API itself. You dont need a key.

Its an embed code from Google Maps website.

(ok, the map is actully implemneted with the API. But its Google
responiblity to take care of that. The map is loaded as an iframe from
the maps servers. So Google themselves insert their own keys)

ImageResources vs ImageResources.getSafeUri

I find if using
Image image1 = New Image(ImageResources);
image1.setSize("200px", "180px");

the image cannot shrink to fit the image1 widget, but only a portion
of the image is shown.

if using
Image image1 = New Image(ImageResources.getSafeUri());
image1.setSize("200px", "180px");

the image can shrink to fit the size of image1 widget.

why there is so different?

not a rails issue but an issue from not understanding postgresql.

probably a bad idea to use 'postgres' as the user/owner of a database and postgres has users/roles/grants functionality for the purpose of program interface with the postgres server.

if you are intent on using postgres without gaining any knowledge about it's authentication mechanisms, then you should understand that user postgres doesn't have a password and out of the box, can only use the localhost postgresql server via a local socket (not TCP/IP) - thus database.yml shouldn't have a password, a port # or anything but the actual local socket (/var/run/postgresql/$SOME_PID_FILE ?)

Stupid me, I simply added the following line to my create method in the
controller.

@game.user = current_user

Now I just need to figure out a way of displaying the actual games under
the profiles so that other users can view.

I have string, that length greater than 4000.
And i change the setting tts engine as pitch value , speech rate.
Whenever string length greater that 4000, tts engine starts and reading at its default setting(i mean pitch, speech rate values).

If there is string which has length less than 4000, my values are set (pitch value and speech rate).

Can anybody tell me what exactly solution for this.

I would like it so that when a new game is added it will associate
itself with the current logged in user rather than entering the
username. Would I have to do this as part of the _form.html.erb input

[android-developers] Problem Creating new Contact with photo

Hi,

I am trying to create a new Contact with a photo, but my code doesn´t
work properly. The thing is that the first time I execute the code the
new contact doesn´t appear on the Contacts List, but the second time I
execute it the contact appears twice and properly. I have tried the
same code but omitting the section that includes the photo and the
contact appears on the contact list fine the first time I try, so the
problem must be related to the photo inclusion.

I cannot understand why the first execution doesn´t work and the
second one does. As I said, when I create the contact for the second
time the new entrance appears twice on the contact list, with the
contact´s name, photo, and everything, so I guess the problem should
not be on the encoding.

I hope someone can help me.

[Rails] How to see the order of script execution and file access throughout a Rails app lifecycle?

While starting off in Rails it's a daunting task to connect all of the
proverbial dots from when the server starts to each request to the
server in terms of what files / scripts are being executed and in the
execution flow.

I was thinking about putting "if env is development, print the
filename" into each script in my app, however I starting thinking that
adding this functionality into a base class may be more effective...
or perhaps there are other options?

I'd be very grateful if someone could help me to understand how to
properly implement something to this effect where I'd end up getting a
holistic view of all files (scripts) in the order that they're
accessed and then on each request, a nice little hierarchy of files
that were processed to reply to that request.

In Ruby 1.9.2, Date.parse is now default to parse dd/mm/yyyy (European
format) instead of mm/dd/yyyy. So the format in mm/dd/yyyy is an invalid
date. home_run gem will help you to overcome this problem, but comes
with lot of incompatibilities. In an application I'm using I had to
revert this gem because it was causing trouble while running tests. Then
I used Date.strptime for this.

Exactly what is it that you are trying to avoid? If you don't want it
to create new objects in the loop then just remove the code.

What comes next in the trace? That should tell you where status is
being called from.
One thought, I wonder whether this status is overriding another one,
possibly in devise?

Also check in development.log (if you have not already done so) to
check what is happening before it fails.

OK so first things first, yes I was kind of angry/upset because it
seemed like I had tried all possible routes and have no solution. I
apologize if my "threat" to re-post this question every week (lol)
came off too strong.

But honestly, I've been at this for nearly a month where I bought a
Bluetooth adapter for $80 and hooked it up to Arduino as my driver-
interface. I used Arduino to communicate with the adapter, but because
the adapter does not have a HID profile, I am kind of stuck.
(Re-)write a HID profile? how to add profile to BT stack? Re-invent
the wheel? Are my #googling skills up to par?

So I resorted to reading a bluetooth stream from the device via BT. I
manually send signals to Arduino (from button or typing) which get
sent over BT to the tablet. I've got IME's down. But for mouse clicks
and motions and pressure and all the goodies ... I've been royally
stuck :(

I'm sorry but in the name of learning I shall continue to ask!

The basic answer is: yes. You *do* need a server to accomplish this.
Having a backend solution is probably the most feasible path, and it's
done the majority of the time.

There are other ways, sms, bluetooth, email, etc... But these aren't
really as common as using a web backend.

[Rails] Does Devise make use of a "status" method? Weird bug.

So I've inherited a legacy application and I'm trying to work around the
edges as I put an admin tool interface on top of the existing code base.
I install Devise for user authentication, since I've used it in the
past. I change none of the default code. And yet, on successful sign
in, I get an error:

Render and/or redirect were called multiple times in this action. Please
note that you may only call render OR redirect, and at most once per
action. Also note that neither redirect nor render terminate execution
of the action, so if you want to exit an action after redirecting, you
need to do something like "redirect_to(...) and return".

Look at that last line -- the status method of the
application_controller. This is an addition from the legacy code, a
simple monitoring method they installed so that the app responds to a
"/status" call with the text "UP".

I know this to be the problem because if I no longer extend the
ApplicationnController and go straight to ActionController::Base
instead, thus avoiding that status method, then this error goes away.
I'm guessing that the problem goes a little something like this,
"Successful login wants to do a redirect, but then control moves on to
the status method which tries to do a render, and throws that
DoubleRender error." Take out the extra render, and it works.

What I can't figure out for the life of me is how Devise is getting
there in the first place!

The problem is coming from the SessionsController#create method, but
this is just the stock version I've done nothing do it:

This is Devise 2.0.0 on a Rails 3.1 app, Ruby 1.9.2p136. I'm just
realizing, as I go googling around, just how new this version of Devise
is. I may need to back out a bit.

PushButton in Table row??

I currently have a celltable that has data loaded from a database. For every row, I have a Button in the row that points to a pdf. The thing is that I wan't to put an image on the button on each row. So exact same logic is now but instead of having text on the button, I want to put an image. If the database brings back 20 records, there are twenty rows and thus 20 buttons. How can I load the exact same image to all 20 buttons? I currently am using a ButtonCell, so I am not sure how to go about this?? I know that "PushButtons" can have images on them> How could I load a push button to each row in a cell table??

No. You can't do anything "during the install". You check when you run.

It still seems like the user is misinformed as to which version of the app he is using from a market perspective.

[android-developers] Need architecture guidance in reference to a social app

i need to know how an actual developer might solve this problem .

I have the app on my device and so do you.
In the app i write a message and this message is passed to your app .
You open and your app are notified a new message awaits.
The action you take in reference to this message generates a
notification to me and an update to facebook.
This action also generates a date and time that will populate another
activity on your app and mine.

I am thinking sqllite running off the sd on each device

Question: How do i handle the exchange between the two devices.
Am i going to need a server to accomplish this?

GIS Distance from Point to Geometry Collection

I have a model that currently stores a Geographic Point (Using Django
GIS (GeoDjango)) and another model that has a field to store a
geometry collection (A collection of polygons, lines, and or points).

I am trying to find the distance from the point to any one of the
shapes in the geometry collection. Apparently the distance function
only works on single shapes, not a collection. Are there any
workarounds to this?

I open a window and I change the value of a <input> element that I

catch the onChange events from GWT in parent window?

Hi all,
I am newbie in django and while trying to write a database router for
using multiple database I did something like :

class Meta:
using = 'somedatabasename'

in Django models.py.

However while doing a syncdb I get an error like this :

TypeError: 'class Meta' got invalid attribute(s): using

what am I missing here??

any pointers or docs will be of great help.

Useful little package for y'all, written by Julien Phalip, which I've packaged and pushed to PyPI.

Inverts the usual @login_required logic, and instead makes all your views private by default, and gives you a @login_not_required.

(And a few other useful bits and pieces.)
