I'm not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for, but as I've gone through the steps of learning CakePHP, there are definitely some topics that are pretty much required for most projects but are rarely understood completely.
For example are you completely familiar with the theory and workings of Auth and ACL in cakephp? It's needed in pretty much every application but can be very confusing.

I've also bid on small freelance projects to work on larger CakePHP applications which has helped give me a some good knowledge as to common implementations of certain features.
