Then you might need to re-think your design.
Perhaps load them all as custom tiles, and then just the few that are
in the current view as encoded polylines, refreshing by AJAX when the
user pans and zooms the map.
I don't know what area of coverage you're interested in, but if you
think, for example, of 2000 trails spread all over the US, when the
entire country is in view, each trail might be just a dot on the
screen. (Except something big like the Lewis and Clark trail, of
course) :-)
