Ah! I found the solution. Until yesterday it was possible to send
Lessingstraße just urlencoded in ISO-8859-1, as you can see here:

http://maps.google.com/maps/geo?sensor=false&q=Lessingstra%DFe%2C+73037+G%F6ppingen%2C+DE&output=xml&key=MYKEY&oe=utf8&gl=de&hl=de

and now you have to utf8encode the address before you urlencode it.

This example works:

http://maps.google.com/maps/geo?sensor=false&q=Lessingstra%C3%9Fe%2C+73037+G%C3%B6ppingen%2C+DE&output=xml&key=MYKEY&oe=utf8&gl=de&hl=de
