Adding driving directions layer to map in web page

Hello everyone and thanks for yoru help in advance. I am using the
Google Maps API to embed a ap within a webpage. I have been able to
place an icon on the location, but would like to add a driving
directions and other details overlay on the map, but can't seem to
find a good example in the API documentation. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.
