changing map size for custom map

This is a bit of a newbie question, but i am using some code i found
on the web to set up a custom map. I cut up my image to 256x256 tiles,
and the view window is created by

<div id="map" style="width: 512px; height: 512px;"></div>

but when i increase the height and width in the div tag then the
browser freezes and warns me that a script is not responding.

My question is do i have to change the size of the tiles if i want a
bigger viewing area? I cannot see anywhere in the javascript that
handles size...

any pointers to which part of the documentation i should be looking
at?
