OnMouseOver shading inview and outview in sidebar... browser dependant?

It seems that in Chrome, FF, Safari, and Opera the inview, outview
shading in the sidebar works correctly. Does not work in IE. The W3C
CSS validation check says:

Property opacity doesn't exist in CSS level 2.1 but exists in : 0.4

Does this just not work in IE? Or is there a way to code it different
for IE?
I can easily check for which browsers and versions are used and direct
to a different CSS.

The rest of my project is going great. All things working well, this
forum has been awesome for help.
