Working From Home - What You Will Need From Your Family and Friends
So you have decided to work from home so that you can have more time
freedom for yourself, and more time for your kids and loved ones.
Although working from home can be very rewarding in that respect,
loved ones may see it as an opportunity to spend more time with you.
After all, you are at home all the time. If you are not careful, you
will be making endless cups of tea for friends, taking more social
calls than you can handle, and in your spare time you'll be the local
taxi. Sure you might be the most popular person on the block, but your
business will be down the drain. Being open and honest with your loved
ones up front can help you on your path to success. Here are some
things I did when I started my own home business, so that everyone was
on the same page.
Tell people up front
Let people know how important your business is to you, and how much
time and effort you need to devote to it to make it work. Unless
people are running a home business themselves, it is difficult for
them to understand what is required to succeed, especially at the
start when you are getting over the learning curve. True friends will
respect you, and will be grateful that you were open and honest about
it.
Ask for help
Don't be afraid to ask for help with day to day activities if you need
it. Think about ways you may be able to free up some of your time. For
example, if your kids are at the same school as a friend's, maybe you
could alternate pick-ups so that you don't need to do it every single
day. With maintenance around the house, you could get a group of
friends together, have a working B and put on a BBQ. Good friends and
family are usually happy to help out. Just don't be too proud to ask
for their help, and be grateful to others when they do help.
Schedule breaks
You can always schedule breaks in to your day where you can ring a
friend, or drive the kids somewhere. You just need to make sure you
keep on top of how much time you spend doing these types of things. If
you need to go and pick the kids up, make sure they give you enough
warning so that you can work around it.
Schedule quiet time
There is nothing worse than losing your train of thought midway
through writing an article because one of your kids has come screaming
through the front door and distracted you. Or you're on a webinar, and
you miss half the training because the dogs are barking outside and no-
one at home even seems to notice. You may need to schedule some time
in your day for "quiet time". During this time, you can focus on the
things that require the most concentration. Tell everyone in the house
that you need them to be quiet during that time. You could maybe
arrange for your kids to go and see a movie during that time, or go to
a friend's house.
Some of these things may sound harsh. The reality is that many people
fail in home based businesses for a number of reasons, one of which is
constant disruptions from loved ones. I know because I had to set down
some ground rules or my own business would have been just another drop
in the pool of home business failure.
