KML Overlays will not load when map's embedded on a page using MochiKit

this issue concerns a new UN website with a Google Map that stopped
working when placed in a page containing other functionality, the
latter of which uses Mochikit. Whether this is the issue or not I do
not know, but it is definately a JavaSvript error I am getting.

I am displaying KML in overlays on this page:
http://www.unsceb.org/newsfeeds/newsmap/newspage

as you will see, on this page there are two functional sections:

1. the map, showing newsfeeds by organization (each organization is a
KML overlay with multiple feed markers)
2. newsfeeds rendered in html, with a menu on right hand side that
adds feeds to the page on the basis of theme. This menu conflicts with
the map.

these 2 things work perfectly, independently. but when put on one page
the map menu (where you select overlays) stops working completely.

After several days of looking into this i have to admit defeat and I
do not know where else to turn.

You will see the map function correctly here:
http://www.unsceb.org/newsfeeds/newsmap/regional/newsmap_view

but the requirement is to have the former page work.

i hope you can help.
