Getting directions ... by mass transit?

So I have to ask, is there a way, using either the v2 or v3 API, to
get directions by means of mass transit? All I could see was walk,
bike, or driving. I know our area is on google maps, when I look up
directions online (maps.google.com) it gives me the option of mass
transit besides the other three. Can the same be done with either
APIs?

Failing that, what options do I have? Our transit system offers all
the files for GTFS that anyone can download, but I'm not sure if I can
do anything with them on my end.

Looking for suggestions.
