Internet Explorer error with staticmap api

When attempting to use static maps (example below) in Internet
Explorer 8, I'm getting this error on some systems:

"Unable to download staticmap from maps.google.com.
Unable to open this Internet site. The requested site is either
unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later."

I've tried several suggested solutions posted against this error but
with not success. Any ideas?
