The panorama object triggers an event when it errors:

However, if you create a new StreetViewClient object, then its
StreetViewData contains the status code. This is what I use in
http://www.acleach.me.uk/gmaps/streetview-infow2.htm -- having got the
StreetViewData, I can then use that to set up the StreetViewPanorama.
