But I beleive its just a normal HTTP link to maps.google.com which is
intercepted and forwarded to the Maps App. (get a link for Google Maps
using the 'Link' top right above the map)

eg
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=paris,+france

on the device would offer to open in the Maps App.
