Two Google Maps APIs for geocoding?

I've just set up a function to geocode an address, but I've ran into
two different Google Maps Geocoding APIs?

The first- (seems to be mentioned more often around the forums / web)
http://maps.google.com/maps/api/geocode/xml?address=[address]&sensor=[true_or_false]

The second-
http://maps.google.com/maps/geo?output=[xml_or_json]&q=[address]

Am I supposed to use one over the other? Or?

Can someone please shed some light :)
