gdownloardurl and json in version 3

Hi,
I'm trying to convert a map from v2 to v3 where I load markers using
gdownloadurl and json. I've seen some posts regarding this that
utilize a third-party js to work with xml, but is there an inherent
way in google v3 to work with json like I was in this map?
