Static map scr= Simplest thing not working

Just starting out on Google Maps and don't seem to be able to get the
simplest thing to work?

I have embedded the following static image in my web page but it is
not displaying. Am I missing something obvious?

center=51.84316,-0.89838&zoom=12&size=512x512&format=jpeg" />

Incidentally if I simply put it in a browser address bar I get the
image OK
