It would be at least polite to ask the author if you can copy his
code.

There's more to it than that, as if you do just copy the code you
would also have to translate your own data to the JSON format that
code expects. That's why I was suggesting you see how it works, but
then write your own version to use the data as you have it available,
or can make it available.
