noob question about URLconf

I'm following the Django book but run into a pathing problem (I think)
I did exactly what the book said, even copying and pasting the code as
to make sure I didn't make a typo.

so in the views.py I have

from django.http import HttpResponse

def hello(request):
return HttpResponse("Hello world")

and url I have

from django.conf.urls.defaults import *
from mysite.views import hello

urlpatterns = patterns('',
('^hello/$', hello),
)

I get the error "Unable to connect" what is wrong?
