[Google Maps API v2] Converting Image to Google Maps Projection

Can I convert an image into the Google Maps projection? I want to use
it as a layer for my map.

I want to use several images produced by the National Renewable Energy
Laboratory that look like:
http://www.nrel.gov/gis/images/geothermal_resource2009-final.jpg

I'd crop the map, so it would only include the 48 continental states.
