Thanks Kumar for your help.  I do understand the activity lifecycle and see your point.  I guess I need to take two steps back and think this over...

As you suggested to just do the work onResume()  I tried getting the passed intent extras but I guess they are not sent to the activity if it's only being brought to the top of the history stack...
