In brief, yes, they're thinking about it (and more than thinking actually), but there are a bunch of issues to be solved before it comes in GWT proper: support in the embedded server (i.e. upgrade to Jetty 7, but there's an issue with the classloader; but the real issue is that the WebSockets protocol is still in flux), and support in HtmlUnit (so you can use websockets in unit tests too).
I think any work on this is postponed until the protocol is stabilized.
