I think I'm going blind looking and re-looking.

I'm sorry to be so thick about this, but I'm pretty sure my problem is
that I don't really understand what it means to add something to the
DOM (although I suspect I may have done it in the past)... and
relentless googling is not helping.

But having copied that section of your code exactly, I'm thinking that
this must take place elsewhere, but I can't see where - all the rest
of it seems to just be about setting up the markers and the sidebar...
