Well the answer was simple: the attribute is "background". I use the
following drawable to specify a red background color when clicking the
button:

android:exitFadeDuration="@android:integer/config_mediumAnimTime">

<item android:state_window_focused="false"
android:drawable="@android:color/transparent" />
