[Google Maps API v2] trouble with markerclusterer and counting records in sidebar

I have two troubles I can't figure how to solve.
1. I can only get the markerclusterer to cluster my entire xml file
rather that just what is selected. I'd also like the sidebar to
display the markers even when there clustered.
2. I want to display a count of records displayed in the sidebar,
which seems like it should be easy, but not for me on this particular
day
