weird ifnotequal issue

fieldname does in fact equal "-" so why is the TR still showing?

{% ifnotequal mymodel.fieldname"-"%}
<tr>
<td class="left">Flagged Reason</td>
<td class="right">{{mymodel.fieldname}}</td>
</tr>
{%endifnotequal%}
