[Google Maps API v2] Is there a way to get an API key for a private network to experiment with?

So here I am at home wanting to just tinker with the API and an old
computer running Apache inside my internal net. About a year ago I got
an API key. I saved off the email that told met the key was good for a
google pages domain but when I tried to build a web page there with
the test script they sent along the google pages page designer barfed
saying it wouldn't allow certain characters and the API key certainly
doesn't work on the private Apache server.

Any suggestions?
