The API knows about that: try it here -- http://econym.org.uk/gmap/example_didyoumean1.htm

So it's not the address, it's something you're doing to the address.
Are you introducing HTML formatting into what you are asking the
geocoder?

"835 Market Street<br />Westminster, MD 21157" won't work -- or at
least, it gets the wrong answers.
