Found the solution, using extras. When passing along extras to the pending intent, it's important to add the flag FLAG_UPDATE_CURRENT.

    Intent sendIntent = new Intent("SMS_SENT");

    sendIntent.putExtra("message", formattedMessage);

    sendIntent.putExtra("number", phone);

    PendingIntent sentPI = PendingIntent.getBroadcast(context, 0, sendIntent, PendingIntent.FLAG_UPDATE_CURRENT);
