Containable calls

Is there a way to bring back only the posts that satisfy 'containable' conditions?

i.e if i ask contain for posts that have an author => ted    instead of just giving me ALL posts and then giving me the related data only on the ones that satisfy the condition, can I ONLY get back the posts that satisfy the condition???
