Expired session

A user is logged in (using the Auth component) and he leaves his
browser alone long enough for the session to expire. When he returns
and tries to do something, he is redirected to the log in screen. Is
it possible to determine that the session has expired as opposed to
him being a user trying to do something he does not have permission to
do?
