Re: "unneccessary" query

i really dont like your approach
$this->Member->create(
$this->Member->find('first', array(
'conditions' => array('Member.character' =>
$new_data['name']),
'recursive' => -1)
)
);
is not a nice thing to do
it messes up a lot of things - unnecessarily

you should use create() ONLY if you really want to create a new entry
