save_as only saves data showing on the form

I have a very extensive model and and an admin form which contains key
fields from that model. Other data is editedin a different form.

I need to be able to copy data from a record to a new record so I set
save_as to be True in my admin. However, that does not copy all data
from the model, just data that is handled by the admin form.

I need to find somewhere, where I can catch the "save as" after the
new record is created so I can copy over the other fields and related
record sets from the original record. I can't find such a place. Any
suggestions?
