[android-developers] is it possible to set env_vars CLASSPATH for a command line test build?

hello, I looked at and have on the
thumb-drive to read while working

http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/projects/index.html

Managing Projects >
Managing Projects from the Command Line

and have most of it coded into a driver that got android to issue a -
help response which I have now put where I can read it while trying to
code and will be working today on getting the rest of it coded into
the build driver

I have JAVA_HOME and DEV_HOME env_vars coded and want to know if
CLASSPATH ^has^ to be [emphasis on "has to be"] on the command line
to run a first attempt beginner sample build or if it is more like I
can look in .classpath on some sample projects to find a few base
locations in .... or what to do to go about finding them ~ I am not
using any command shells or scripts - just driving the build directly

all I want to do is get a first prototyping "get it to run" build and
not tear anything up = is this possible ??..

I do not care about failed builds as I want to read what it is telling
me and work from there, all I care about is not having it try to set
some var "behind my view" and then not telling me about it and
refusing to run....
