That would be useful to know, though I'm not sure there's a way to
tell that at runtime. sourceDir on ApplicationInfo, perhaps.

Agreed.

It's only overkill if it doesn't help.

I'm going to be in a similar situation in a few months (I hope),
distributing APKs with large assets that should allow install-to-SD
for older devices. If you decide to go down the checksum path, drop me
a line off-list, and perhaps we can collaborate on an open source
solution, if you're up for that.
