You can also see in the Android documentation:

"Dalvik has been written so that a device can run multiple VMs efficiently."

The reason is safety. WIth a marketplace of a bazillion app developers, you want maximum isolation of each app from each other so they don't mess each other up.

Also, it's an easier programming model to assume an app is the only one on its machine.
