Does anyone know how to use the AppController with the error/exception handling?

In my app I have some logic taking place in my AppController's beforeFilter() function where I'm setting a few variables that get used in my default layout, and subsequently on all pages of the site.

When testing my error pages in production mode (debug=0), I noticed the variables I'm setting in my AppController aren't getting passed to the layout, even though the error pages appear to be using the default layout.

Will someone help me figure this out? Thanks!
