Agreed.  Pre-installed apps are updated from Google Play all the time, and many rely on this capability.

And the versionCode on Google Play  has to be higher than the installed test version.

In short if you distribute non official test versions to user (beta, debugging, ...), do not forget to increment the versionCode if the final Google Play version has changed in the meantime
