I am testing examples of AccountManager#getAuthToken, but I am not sure if it's possible, even with a pop-up dialog asking the user (in my app) for their permission to do so.. whether or not I can obtain a token that can then be used with gmail api's to send out email with.

Yes. You can obtain an OAuth token which lets you authenticate to gmail's SMTP sever and send email with the user's account. Check Google's documentation for the exact protocol.
