Problem setting up django server

I just installed Django and I'm trying to initially set up the server, as detailed in the 'Part 1' Tutorial. I haven't configured any settings yet. Whenever I run the command "python manage.py runserver", I get the following message:

TypeError: Error when calling the metaclass bases

    __init__() keywords must be strings

Any ideas as to why this is?
