Try installing something like elFinder (http://elfinder.org/), makes file uploads very easy (folder management, drag and drop).  The documentation isn't the best, certainly not step by step instructions. 

However, I have created a Croogo 1.5 plugin for elFinder, which you could adapt for CakePHP use without Croogo.
