Recommended way to present optional/nullable date/datetime form fields?

Hi folks,

I was thinking, for example, a user is given an optional date/datetime field for a record. In the page containing the form to edit the record, a corresponding date/datetime input is presented. What would be the best way to give the user the option not to enter a date in that field?
