One more observation is - first column always takes some specific width. I tried by putting a blank string in the fist column and build. Then the first column still takes some specific width and rest of the columns are taking it's required width.
I tried different ways - but couldn't figure out a logical reason for this behavior.

So I would suggest you back up, comment out everything in your table making method, and start adding things back in piece by piece. Then see where it starts to fail.
