Re: [Google Maps API v2] Re: version2 to version 3 transition

The complication is probably that at the time you actully implemented the use of the API, the terms would of been different, its those terms you would of been 'agreeing' to. For example

Can see from
that the depreciation period has been OVER the required 3 years.

Its unfortunate you have been caught unawares, but can't really see Google being very sympathetic.

From https://developers.google.com/maps/terms#section_4_4:

"Google will announce if it intends to discontinue or make backwards incompatible changes to this API or Service. Google will use commercially reasonable efforts to continue to operate those Google Maps API versions and features identified at http://developers.google.com/maps/maps-api-list without these changes until the later of: (i) one year after the announcement or (ii) April 20, 2015, unless (as Google determines in its reasonable good faith judgment):
  • equired by law or third party relationship (including if there is a change in applicable law or relationship), or
  • doing so could create a security risk or substantial economic or material technical burden.

The above policy is the "Deprecation Policy.""

We interpreted this to mean v2 would be supported at least until April 2015.  we have not been to the v2 developers page for awhile to see the shutdown message.  we also did not even get an email about it (even though we are registered) until this week.

it makes me nervous about devoting a lot of effort with V3 API.  will V4 also not be backward compatible?

We have a complex website that uses the google maps v2 api extensively, and only today found out that v2 will no longer be supported on November 19. We use this webpage operationally for a NASA funded airborne science instrument, so it will be a significant hardship if this page does not work.  Questions:

1 - We have thousands of lines of javascript code to modify. Is there a way for us to test the v2 code with the v3 wrapper for v2?

2 - is there a way we could get an extension for using v2 until we are able to complete the migration to v3? This page https://developers.google.com/maps/terms#section_4_4
indicated that the soonest it would be no longer supported was april 2015, so we have not been worried about making the code changes. we only today found out that November 19 was the new deadline.

Thanks for your reply.
