Corporations don't pay taxes, they collect them from us.

No big surprise here. GE owns Obama.

Adam Weinstein ought to do his own research instead of relying on a

[Exxon Says It Does Pay U.S. Income TaxesApril 7, 2010 - 3:44 pmShare59
Christopher HelmanBio | Email
Christopher Helman is an Associate Editor at Forbes, based in Houston

Recently we published the story "What the Top U.S. Companies Pay In
Taxes," and a related blog post, "Big Oil's Tax Bill." What's received
the most attention from readers and bloggers was our assertion that
ExxonMobil, despite recording more than $15 billion in income taxes,
"paid none of its 2009 income taxes in the U.S."

Although I came up with that by reading the company's annual 10-k filing
with the SEC, ExxonMobil spokesman Alan Jeffers assures me that this is
wrong, that Exxon did indeed pay substantial income taxes to the U.S.
Treasury in 2009, and that it overpaid taxes in 2008. How much? Well,
Jeffers says so far he's not at liberty to disclose that information.
"That's not something we're required to disclose, nor do we."

So what gives? Jeffers explains that what ExxonMobil reports in its
annual consolidated financial statements is just accounting, that the
numbers reflect expenses or credits recorded throughout the year and "do
not represent our tax bill," which has not yet been filed, let alone
settled. The financial results listed in the 10-k "is an accurate
reflection of what it is, but not what you thought it was," says
Jeffers.

What the financial statement says is that ExxonMobil, in 2009, after a
handful of deferrals, recorded a total U.S. income tax benefit (i.e., a
refund) of $46 million. Next to this, it shows total non-U.S. income
taxes of $15.165 billion.

My mistake was in thinking that these figures somehow reflected actual
tax benefits and liabilities. So what we should have written was that
ExxonMobil "recorded" no U.S. income taxes for 2009 instead of "paid."
All you re-bloggers out there, please note the clarification. Mea culpa.

And for all you commenters outraged that Exxon isn't paying taxes in the
U.S., don't worry, it is. Our article only focused on income taxes, but
it's worth noting that the 10-k also records $7.7 billion in other taxes
in the U.S. (like sales taxes) and more than $50 billion of other taxes
and duties paid (I mean recorded) overseas.

There's a lingering issue here. If Exxon's income tax line items don't
mean what they say, then what does that imply about other important
stuff? Are "earnings after income taxes," really $19.28 billion? Are
earnings per share really $3.99? Does it all wash out? We've asked Exxon
to explain and will let you know what they say.]

But it isn't a five minute deal Wes.
It takes years to groom a real politician and the people doing the grooming
are the electorate.
This is something that has changed a lot over the course of my lifetime.
I met Bob Barr and Dave Bonier because I was introduced by people farther up
the political food chain.
A lot farther up.
The purose of those introductions, and others, was to build a base and also
to ferret out up and coming politicians that didn't cut it.
There is a lot less of that sort of thing in todays world. The old geezers
want to hang on forever and are threatened by the young and ambitious.

There are two ways to make changes. Inside by exercising the rights and
responsibilities of any citizen, and revolt.
Michelle Bachman said that our country was being run by "Gangster
Government" today. It's hard to reconcile that with the fact that she is our
government. That makes her a "Gangster".

Hey, they took the name for themselves. You have to remember that the Tea
Bag Express is a corporation.
It exists to provide a revenue stream to the public relations group that
spawned it.

No but they weren't just "angry". In fact, they weren't very angry at all.
What they were was pretty rational. Not all of them, but most.

When politicians can't get elected on that sort of stuff, they'll quit
trying.\
See my comments above. The making of a politician isn't usually a shake and
bake process.

Well SURE!
LMAO
WTF do you think real political activism is Wes?
This sort of thing isn't something to be "guilty" of - it's what you DO...
That's the real business of political activism and one reason the Tea Party
might not accomplish much.
They are sure raising hell in Republican ranks though. Bennet is toast and
so is Charlie Crist.
It's a Mexican firing squad - you know - where the shooters are circled and
end up killing themselves.

I'm about six or eight months from calling the 2012 election Wes but my
instinct at this point is that Obama/Biden are going to cream Romney/Palin.

Wes, that's banks doing bank business. That's what freewheeling competition
in the financial industry breeds. It's another case of market failure.

And Matt Taibbi, as much as I love his writing, sometimes runs a little over
the top with his interpretations of the facts. d8-)

Hey Ed.
Pretty funny that 41 Republican's sent off their anti-reform letter on the
same day Goldman got popped don't you think.
The letter preceded the indictment by a couple of hours.
I laughed so hard thinking of how Boehner, and especially McConnell, were
probably cursing everything in sight I nearly peed my pants.
You couldn't make this stuff up.

Nah..most of the illegal latiinos coming into the US are from the
poorest areas of Mexico. They are more than willing to be pure
Capitalists.

But they are breaking the law(s) in doing this and should not be allowed
to do so.

Unless those that think they should, will turn a blind eye to the mass
killings of Leftwingers?

That is what the Royal Society panel assigned to look into the climate
researchers supposedly guilty of lying about climate change found after
looking into the matter. "Climategate" as it was called has been found

allegations against the scientists were bogus, the scientists were

It couldn't possibly have anything to do with assholes like Gunner not
paying their taxes and living on welfare, could it?

There are a number of connected issues.
Californian's have passed ballot initiatives imposing mandatory spending
requirements as a percentage of revenues, and in some cases dollars, for a
number of things. There are things that can't legally be cut.

Californian's have passed ballot initiatives that make budget surpluses
illegal.
This guarantees that programs that are beneficial or even essential are cut
during the down years.

Californian's have passed ballot initiatives limiting taxes in truly odd
ways. Proposition 13 is a perfect example.

Californian's have passed ballot initiatives that require the State to do
things, like "Three Strikes", but haven't been willing to pay for the
consequences. The prison population in CA is expensive.

Californian's have passed ballot initiatives that require a balanced budget
every year.

Californian's have passed ballot initiatives term limiting most politicians
at the State level.
What we now have is elected officials out looking for their next gig just
about the time they get the hang of the job and they aren't above being
"helpful" to prospective employeers when required. In fact, it's become a
way of life. You learn your job during the first term and then do whatever
is necessary to secure employment when you are term limited out of office.

None of these involve corrupt or incompetent politicians.
We have that as well but not beyond what you'd expect anywhere else.
Californian's are reaping what they have unwittingly sewn.

Like I said, it's stupidity not extravagance.
There is plenty of money around.

i did some metalworkish kind of stuff this past week and finished it and
erected it today.

you might remember last year i did this silly thing.

http://www.frontiernet.net/~wwixon/tirealien.jpg

we're doing another "litter pick up day" here tomorrow in my little town. 4
miles of road that borders/intersects 600 acres of historic farmland the
land owner wants to convert into a 300 unit condo development. some local
residents created a "save our hamlet" organization. we pick up the litter
along those roads as an expression of our love and concern for that parcel
of land. we'd like to keep it agriculture, hopefully interest a vineyard.
or if not agricultrue, how about a sculpture park similar to the storm king
art center? http://www.stormking.org/

well, so, this year i did another tire "sculpture" (from teh tires that had
been dumped there for the past 40 years.)

http://www.frontiernet.net/~wwixon/tirerobot.jpg

i think this one is a bit overwrought, but i got a chuckle from it anyhow.
the wind spinners are from the domed bottoms of spray paint rattle cans (i
DID some welding on the posts they're attached to). i used discarded neon
tubes, glued colored marbles (from inside paint rattle cans) on the ends.
found a mirror alongside the road and cut it into 5/8" squares and glued 'em
on. found the aluminum and glass domes in a dumpster. someone threw a roll
of aluminum foil alongside the road we're going to pick up along and i was
like, it was a gift from god, saying "here, use this too". i wanted to put
LEDs in the glass tubes and projecting onto the dome (to light it up at
night), but am too cheap and due to poor planning didn't have them on hand
in time. http://graffitiresearchlab.com/projects/led-throwies/

the tire alien STILL hasn't been vandalized, which to me is a TOTAL miracle.
i'm afraid this new one won't last the night... hopefully it will last
until tomorrow morning when we do the pick up so the participants can see it
and hopefully get a chuckle too.

i left the robot in a spot that traditionally gets a lot of dumping.
hopefully it might deter some. i tidied up that area a couple days ago in
preparation for this weekend. today i noticed someone had taken a SHIT
there and left the toilet paper there too. i assumed that was a commentary
on our efforts.

Ten times as many people are killed by health care workers and Doctors

There used to be (25 years ago before I moved) a good surplus tool
place on Rt 220 south of Tyrone on the way to Altoona. Is it still
there? I may be going out that way and want to stop if it's still
around.

The Chamber of Commerce, or Better Business Bureau in that
area might know. Or you could ring up a couple machine shops
or auto parts places, and ask.

I'm in NYS, so I don't get there.

Sure got me! that meat hanger looked a lot like a necktie
holder for in a closet. Of course, it would be dangerous to
get near it. Ouch.

Glad that I got one or two this week.

One thing that I forgot to mention about the shovel, there
is a metal sleeve
on the handle that supposedly makes it easier to rotate and
release the
coal.

Only the last one was unsolved this week, the answers for
this set can be
seen here:
