"The docs clearly state that api key is required", I'm not sure what
else there is to add.

"required" doesn't mean that it is physically blocked in every
circumstance without it.
It can also mean that you are supposed to provide it (or a Premier
ID), and if you didn't you would be breaking the terms of use,
whereupon Bad Things might happen - e.g. you could get blacklisted.
