try wrapping your "template markup" in a block element,

    public interface Template extends SafeHtmlTemplates {
        @SafeHtmlTemplates.Template("<span><img src=\"{0}\"></img><span>{1}</span></span>")
        SafeHtml img(String url, String text);

    }
