Ah. Wouldn't have guessed that in a million years.
That's API v3 code. To my knowledge, there's nothing like that in v2
(the subject of this group) although markerclusterer is vaguely
similar: http://gmaps-utility-library.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/markerclusterer/1.0/docs/reference.html
But being that you're starting out, it's probably a good idea to make
your map in v3 as v2 is deprecated and its future is uncertain. And
the spiderfier looks better, too, imo.
Larry has lots of good examples of v3 code here: http://geocodezip.com/
including a v3 version of the code you are using:
http://www.geocodezip.com/v3_MW_example_map3.html
then it would just be a matter of following the documentation:
https://github.com/jawj/OverlappingMarkerSpiderfier
and directing questions to that group: http://groups.google.com/group/google-maps-js-api-v3
(where I believe the guy who wrote that code is a contributor)
good luck.
