Why not just have them place the devices on a wireless charging system like the Powermat?

Then will charge while sitting around.

As I explained above, these devices are used to control an industrial process.  There are typically many of them out on the factory floor and users can pick them up and operate them, but even when a user isn't interacting with them the server still is.   I want the display to go off because on a typical device that's the biggest battery hog - if the display stays off when not in use we can an get an 8-hour factory shift on one charge.
