QuerySets are evaluated only when accessed. So, you can just do:

def method(qs):
qs = qs.filter(somethingelse=bar)
list(qs)

qs = SomeModel.objects.filter(something=foo)
method(qs)

The queryset will be evaluated at list(qs) time.
