1906: It could be used to scoop muck and water out of a trough.

It also looks like an improvement over the common tin fire shovel. If
you use a little shovel to remove ashes, it's hard to put the ashes into
a bucket without raising dust. With 1906, you could carry the ashes
outside before dumping them into a bucket. It will hold a generous
amount and keep them from spilling or blowing. It looks pretty stable
in case you need to put it down.

A little fire shovel is inadequate to carry coals to start a fire. With
1906, you could reach into a stove with a hot fire and carry a generous
amount of embers securely.

Yes, it's from an old stove.

Correct, for use in confined space when there would be interference with a
regular brace.

Quadrangle Group Settles Pension Fund Case
By LOUISE STORY
Published: April 15, 2010

The Quadrangle Group, the private equity firm that was once run
by the Obama administration's car czar, has agreed to settle a
corruption investigation with Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo's
office and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

<snip>
"This case has started a national investigation of public pension
funds all across the nation," said Mr. Cuomo, the attorney
general of New York State, in a media call. "A significant amount
of this country's wealth are in these public pension funds and I
fear — seeing what we've seen in New York — that it's going to be
a serious problem for the nation."

The case is a chapter in a lengthy investigation of kickbacks
paid by investment firms to advisers for the New York state
pension fund. Several investment firms including the Carlyle
Group have already settled related cases. The firms were accused
of paying kickbacks to individuals close to the state's former
comptroller in order to convince the state to invest pension
money in their funds.

FWIW -- California also has this problem with some of its large
public employee retirement funds.

GM's Pension: A Ticking Time Bomb for Taxpayers?
By JOSEPH R. SZCZESNY Joseph R. Szczesny – 2 hrs 46 mins ago

General Motors Corp. may no longer be the world's biggest
automaker, but it still operates the country's largest pension
fund. The threat to its pension plans has always been an issue,
butit took on a new urgency when GM disclosed April 7 that its
plans were underfunded by more than $27 billion, with more than
half of that being owed to U.S. workers and retirees. Across
town, a post- bankrupt Chrysler faces its own pension shortfall.
Moreover, a report last week from the Government Accounting
Office (GAO) says the pension crisis in the auto industry could
create an unprecedented crisis for the federal Pension Benefit
Guarantee Corp., a government-sponsored organization to backstop
company pensions.

It is clear the "fall-out" from the economic implosion is far
from over.

Given the broadcast media's and government's reports, the NE is already
down the tubes.

Of course, nobody ever believes either of those sources...<g>

BTW, Ed, the biggest difference between Southern and Union manufacturing
is that the Southern plants are hiring and the Union plants aren't.

Not really:

http://lehd.did.census.gov/led/JobGainsLosses/2009Q1/A00000E.pdf

There's no real pattern. Even in 2008, some southern states were
experiencing among the highest rates of job losses in manufacturing.

Or do you have more recent, specific comparative data?

No need. The border patrol is already there in force.
Two summers ago, we were headed south on I-93. Just
south of the notch, we were stopped at a Border Patrol
checkpoint. Apparently there's now a border between
the North Country and the rest of the state.

The Clinton administration never gave any hardware or software to
China.

> And he refused to sign NAFTA

NAFTA is the North American Free Trade Agreement. It has to do with
trade among the US , Canada and Mexico. China isn't a signatory.

It was the Republicans, led by Nixon, who recognized China and opened
the Chinese market to trade. Mao loved Nixon so much that, even after
Nixon had resigned, Mao kept in touch with him. When Nixon's daughter,
Tricia, was married, Mao sent his private plane to Los Angeles, picked
them up, and feted them in China for two weeks.

Walmart is China's greatest asset. It provided a way for Chinese goods
to flow effortlessly to all places in the US, and really created the
American market for Chinese-made items. The Waltons are all staunch
Republicans who, by the way, benefited tremendously from tax-law re-
regulation passed by Bush and the Pug Congress.

Virtually every American company doing business in China is headed by
a Pug contributer.
